The bond of fatherhood
Could use some advice with my job.
Hey guys, I really could use some advise with my job. I work in the construction field building fences and decks. As in my comments my boss is really an unreallistic S.O.B expecting 500+ feet of fence done in a day. Then when you are a zombie in the middle of the week and are only 2 minutes late he wants to scream, yell, and curse at you.(happend only two or three times) Then he gives you the basic **** jobs for a month to make things even harder on you. Not to mention the fact that I know more about the field than him since I have been doing construction most of my working life,and he has been doing this for only 3 yrs. And like most bosses his way is the only way and won't listen to any suggestions from a younger person.(only 5 yrs younger) I have gotten into it with him on several different occations now, and this last time it took all I had to keep from flooring him. I've tried to get a different job, but it seems no one in my area is hireing. I have other skills in another field,but nothing that I am certified in. That is the field that I want to be in, but where I live there isn't a school that that I can go to to get certified. The closest school is in another state. That and the fact that between my child support and the pennies that I make I really don't have the money to start a new career right now. I don't know how long I can keep playing dumb. Help me out will ya fellas.

I am really new here, but I can reassure you that I have been in your shoes and that it is all too common for us guys to act like your boss. I am also in construction.
Just a few things to share here- He perceives you as a threat to his job. You said that you are better, faster and more experienced than he is---Do the math here. Somehow you need to rewire his thinking about you and make yourself into an asset to him and not a threat.
Suggestions: Show up early and BS with him a bit. Find out what he likes to do outside of work. Ask his advice about something totally un-work related (that you know he will know about) like how to repair your lawnmower or what would be a great make-up gift for the wife.
: I don't know anything about your faith, but make a habit of praying for this man on your way to work. Pray for HIM and not how he treats you.
: compliment him in front of others. This is how friends talk about each other. You are in the process of making a friend.
: Continue to work hard and periodically thank him for the opportunity to work with him. Let him know that your FAMILY is grateful also.
Take your time with all of this. If you try to be all sweet all of the sudden, he will smell a rat. Work your plan patiently. Wait him out and he will come around.

First off thank-you for the advice. Since I have posted my last discussion my boss has had 5 people quit or get fired. I am still there. I used some of the advice that you have given me, and I think between that and my loyalty I think that he is starting to realize that I am there to help him in his job not take it from him.
