DIY head gasket repairs - a good idea or not?

So, the economy being what it is, I'm thinking of replacing my leaky head gasket myself. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it a relatively straightforward if long job, or is this one of those things like dentistry, that you really don't want to try at home?

What year, type car, engine? Got a decent torque wrench/tools? Sometimes the cost of the tools alone will send you to a mechanic. You'll want to make sure you get the head back on with even pressure, or it will just leak again.

It's not quite like destistry....but needs to be done right, or you end up spending money and time doing it over.

It's funny you mention, repairing your car. I just read somewhere, and have brother/father-in-law mechanics. Their business is going crazy with people wanting to MAINTAIN their cars instead of dump them, sign of the economy is right! Maybe I need to go get ASA certified! LOL

It really does depend on the typre of car. Some you really dont want to do some a real easy, also some are notorious for cracking heads or warping. As Steve stated if you have the tools also a service manual like chilton or haynes manual will help alot I put a tranny ion my 99 elantra it went alot easier then i thought. if your mechanicly inclined and its not ot bad of a job i dont see why not good luck

James I have had 3 of those car's , if it os the 3.8 engine MAKE VERY SURE you have the heads checked. on all 3 of the ones i had they never over heated they all pushed exhaust into the rad, and all three instances the heads were warped beyond the abaility to mill them flat again. The ones that came through with the 5.0 mmotor were alot better I had one of those that popped the head gasket and i overheated that one bad it just needed a mild cut to be straight. As far as time minus the machine shop time it took me around 12 hrs to do both head gaskets and have it driving again.
