Hey, just wanted to shout out to all the Dads out there doin the fatherhood thing!
I'm wondering where's a good place find "Dadvice" from man-made men?
I have four decision-support systems when it comes to Dad decisions
1. Dad
2. Older Brother
3. Picture of John Wayne (what would The Duke do?)
4. Magic Eight Ball
Beyond these, I just try to think of what the 'hard right' is, rather than the "easy wrong", and what the long term message/ramifications of my decision might be. How might my kid use inductive reasoning to apply this decision to other situations? What does my decision communicate about my values? What are the second and third-order effects of my decision (you can't play soccer today, so you get thrown off the team, so you never get to see your friend from the next town over anymore..)?
In the end, dad decisions are the same as any other decisions. It's just that we let our emotions complicate them
Well, being a Christian I've found some really good books (besides The Book ) on being a dad that are Christian based. If your interested let me know.
I also have really started to talk to my dad about how he raised me. I used to feel I didn't want to bother him about this stuff but found he really likes it. So do I.
I also have a few friends who have kids the same age as mine and sharing thoughts and frustrations sometimes helps.
I just remember picking up some parenting magazines all excited to read 'em. But then, it was all about breastfeeding follies and hormones... there isn't much out there, but I'm hoping to change that... seems like books are the best way to go, but not all dads are readers or have time to read...
if ya'll are interested, I'm sponsoring a web survey just for dads... click here if you're interested... it'll take like 10 minutes.
Likewise, one of the first places that I often turn is to ask my dad. Beyond that I will usually turn to the Interweb and either search on Google or visit a handful of the dad focused blogs that I have come across - or write a post about it on my own dad focused blog.
I decided to start "blogging" on parenting because I spend a lot of time with my kids. I'm a SAHD (stay-at-home-dad) and writing about the stuff that I do with the kids occupies my time. I already have started blogs on photography and scale modeling two years ago. But I didn't start one about being a SAHD until just recently.
Yep, my dad gets my call when I need Fatherly advice. Otherwise I use the fortune program available in Linux, it's more entertaining than a magic eight ball and sometimes actually gives decent advice
